Functionality

Does Sage Earth support multiple logins per account?

At present, Sage Earth only supports single user login. In cases where multiple stakeholders require access, some customers have set up their account using a shared email account (e.g. [email protected]). Plans to introduce multi-user login are on our product roadmap.

Is it possible to upload my data into Sage Earth in CSV or Excel format?

Data upload via CSV or Excel file isn't a current functionality within Sage Earth.

Does Sage Earth offer extractable reports?

Extractable reports are not a current functionality within Sage Earth. Instead, the platform provides a dashboard view of your business's footprint, broken down by 'scopes' (as defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol) and by top emitting activities. Reporting is a key roadmap item, keep an eye out for updates about this feature.

Does Sage Earth offer offsetting options or carbon credits?

There are plans to integrate offset options into Sage Earth, but for now our focus is on the accuracy of our automated carbon accounting and linking resulting footprints to robust and effective mitigation measures. Although offsets have a part to play in reaching 'net zero' emissions, our goal is to provide customers with the tools they need to measure and reduce first.

Does Sage Earth offer advice my business can follow to reduce its’ emissions?

You can find articles covering the most common top emitting business activities, along with advice on how to make reductions in these areas in our Help Centre. You can also head to Sage Advice for more sustainability-focused advice for businesses. We're continuing to build our library of resources as the Sage Earth platform grows.

I have a feature request

We're always looking for ways to improve our users' experience, please email any feature suggestions to [email protected] (or use the in-app chatbot). Our product team regularly reviews all customer feature requests, and where fitting, suggestions are added to our product roadmap for future development.

General enquiries

What is Sage Earth?

Sage Earth is a cloud-based carbon accounting tool that syncs with your business’s accounting software (Sage Business Cloud, Xero or Quickbooks) to automatically measure your business’s emissions and generate a carbon footprint.

Which Sage products is Sage Earth compatible with?

Sage Earth is compatible with Sage Business Cloud Accounting (also known as Sage Accounting or Sage One), along with Xero and Quickbooks. At present, Sage Earth is not compatible with Sage 50, Sage 200 or Sage Intaact, although there are plans to add further connections on the product roadmap.

Does Sage Earth integrate with Sage 50?

We’ve been trialling a manual upload function for Sage 50 users, however further work is needed before this is widely released. If you'd like to register interest in our Sage 50 connector, please email [email protected].

Is Sage Earth only available to Sage customers?

No, Sage Earth is also available to Xero and Quickbooks users.

What sort of businesses is Sage Earth best suited to?

Sage Earth is best suited to UK-based small to medium businesses (SMBs) with a turnover of £50 million or less. Although our customers fall across many industries, the platform isn’t currently suited to businesses operating in the agricultural sector, due to the different types of emissions involved.

Is Sage Earth suitable for accountants?

Sage Earth is used by accountants, however, it isn't yet possible to access multiple client dashboards via one login. Instead, each client account currently requires a separate login. We believe accountants have a key role to play in supporting SMB clients to decarbonise, and an accountants' version of the platform is in development.

Which countries does Sage Earth serve?

Sage Earth is currently only available to UK customers. This is because the platform uses a dataset managed by the UK Office for National Statistics and based on UK industry averages for its calculations. There are plans to integrate further datasets into our calculation methodology and expand into further regions on our roadmap.

I’d like to request a demo

You can watch a short demo video of Sage Earth here. If you still have questions and are interested a live demo of the platform, please email your request to [email protected]. Please note, live demos are currently only available to businesses using Sage Business Cloud Accounting, Xero or Quickbooks

Do you offer a free or trial version of Sage Earth?

We don't offer a free or trial version of Sage Earth, however you can watch a short demo video here. Subscription to Sage Earth is £9 per month (excl. VAT) with no minimum subscription period, you can sign up for an account here.

Methodology

How does Sage Earth work?

Sage Earth automates the process of calculating a business's emissions by ingesting data from your accounting software and matching transactions to emission factors to create a carbon footprint estimate. Users can further refine this estimate by manually inputting further information relating to their operations.

What methodology does Sage Earth use in its calculations?

Sage Earth uses a hybrid combination of spend and activity-based data to calculate your business's footprint. Our methodology is underpinned by a dataset of UK industry average emissions factors (managed by the UK ONS) and is always compatible with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol - the globally agreed standard for measuring carbon emissions.

What data is Sage Earth pulling from my accounting platform?

Sage Earth pulls details of your bank payments and paid invoices from your accounting software in order to generate a carbon footprint for your business. The platform also pulls data from your profit and loss report which is used to inform your carbon intensity factor.

What is Sage Earth’s approach to Scope 3 emissions?

As scope 3 emissions typically make up the majority of a business's carbon footprint, our approach is to first allocate all of a business’s emissions to scope 3 by default and then subtract their scope 1 and 2 emissions from this. We believe this approach is best to ensure businesses are accountable for all their associated emissions by default.

Does Sage Earth take into account renewable or ‘green’ energy tariffs?

Sage Earth uses a location-based method which doesn’t specifically look at renewable energy but instead looks at the grid mix at the time of purchase. Part of the challenge in accurately measuring renewable or ‘green’ energy is relying on energy suppliers to publish accurate and reliable data, which unfortunately isn't always the case. Renewable energy is something we're certainly looking to measure more accurately in the future, we're just exploring the best way to do this.

Why should I use Sage Earth and not commission a sustainability consultant?

Consultants can deliver excellent impact measurement and strategy, but often at a significant cost. Their manual approach is very thorough and involved, which often takes a large investment of time. This approach results in a one-off carbon footprint, rather than one that is updated in near-real time by a live accounting feed.

For this reason, a consultancy-led approach is not fit to meet the needs of the climate crisis at scale. SMBs make up over 90% of the businesses within the UK's private sector. Therefore, changes they make can have a significant impact on the UK's emissions. Sage Earth applies the latest technology to support businesses in raising awareness of their carbon footprint at a fraction of a consultant's cost and time.

Pricing

How much does Sage Earth cost?

Subscription to Sage Earth is £9 per month (excl. VAT). The first payment is taken from your credit card upon sign up, with subsequent payments taken on the same day of each month thereafter. There is no minimum contract period, you can choose to cancel your subscription at any time.

Sales enquiries

Do you offer partnerships or affiliate opportunities?

Please email all queries regarding partnerships or affiliate opportunities to [email protected].

Security

What personal information and/or company data does Sage Earth collect and how is it processed?

As a Sage Group company, Sage Earth adheres to Sage's Privacy Notice and observes all UK GDPR laws as set out by the UK Data Protection Act 2018. You can email [email protected] to request a copy of Sage Earth's Terms of Service.

Set up and support

What internal support is required when setting up Sage Earth?

We advise having a member of your Finance team on hand during the set-up process, as you'll need to log into your accounting platform in order to sync your data. Their knowledge of how spend is assigned within your accounting software will also be valuable when refining your automated footprint calculation.

What support is available to Sage Earth customers?

You can email all support queries to [email protected] or drop a message in the in-app chatbot, where they will be picked up and actioned by a member of the Sage Earth Customer Success team. New customers can also request an introductory call to walk through the platform with a member of the team (subject to availability).

I'm trying to set up Sage Earth, but it doesn't recognise my SIC code/my business doesn't have a SIC code.

During the set-up process, Sage Earth asks for your SIC (Standard Industrial Categorisation) code to determine the industry your business operates in and inform your carbon footprint. Some businesses may not have a SIC code, in these instances (or where you don't know), select the best fit. A full list of SIC codes Sage Earth uses can be found here.
