Understand how SIC codes are used to calculate a carbon footprint that is specific to your business

Updated over 2 years ago

What are SIC codes?

SIC (or Standard Industry Classification) Codes are used by the UK government to classify different industries within the economy. They are predominately used for tax purposes, but the Office for National Statistics (ONS) also uses them to organise carbon dioxide conversion factors for each industry. These can then be used to calculate the CO2 emissions for money spent with specific suppliers.

How does Sage Earth use them?

As SIC codes are allocated to your business by the government, we can also use them to ensure we are making calculations of your carbon footprint that are specific to the industry that your business belongs to.

If you wish to know how we make these calculations, we've written a helpful breakdown of our methodology here. By doing this, you will effectively be giving us clues to help us correctly identify your business in Companies House. You can identify the SIC codes allocated to your business easily with a quick search in Companies House online.

Top tip: A business can have multiple SIC codes applied to it, so please enter all those that are applicable to your business.
